Presidential Secretariat regards President Viktor Yuschenko's heading the Our Ukraine People's Union party does not break the Constitution and laws, Secretariat deputy head Maryna Stavniichuk has announced at a press briefing.
"It's important to understand... today there are no formal legal grounds for speaking about violation [in connection with Yuschenko elected as the OUPU leader], first of all, of the constitutional provisions and provisions of the law on political parties," she said.
In her words, the OUPU congress has not finished its work yet, there will be a second stage, where changes will be made to the party statute to distinguish between functions of the political leader and the party leadership's organizational-administrative functions.
Stavniichuk stressed, the party in fact elected Yuschenko as its leader but this will be registered legally after the second stage of the congress is held and corresponding changes to the statute are made.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, President Viktor Yuschenko regards his election as leader of the Our Ukraine People's Union party as symbolic.
The OUPU at its second congress is likely to complete the party statute with the provision for Yuschenko to head it.
The Justice Ministry intends to officially register Yuschenko as leader of the OUPU after the party governing bodies are formed at the next stage of the congress.
The OUPU at its congress on November 29 elected Viktor Yuschenko as the party political leader to replace the Our Ukraine - People's Self-Defense bloc faction chairperson Viacheslav Kyrylenko.
