(The news story is updated with commentary of Justice Minister Mykola Onyschuk).
The Our Ukraine People's Union party has elected President Viktor Yuschenko its leader instead of Viacheslav Kyrylenko, head of the Our Ukraine - People's Self-Defense Bloc faction.
The relevant decision was made at the party congress on Saturday, November 29.
It was Kyrylenko who put forward the proposition to elect Yuschenko. The initiative was endorsed by the congress unanimously.
The congress approved the Kyrylenko's report on his activity as the party leader.
Onyschuk said that the Justice Ministry intends to officially register President Viktor Yuschenko leader of the Our Ukraine People's Union party after the procedure of formation of the party's governing bodies is completed at the next stage of the congress.
"The Justice Ministry will consider these issues when they come for registration in the Ministry due to the changes in the party's leadership," the Minister said.
Onyschuk found it difficult to answer when the next stage of the party's congress will take place.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Our Ukraine People's Union party held its extraordinary congress on Saturday, November 29.
On March 31, 2007, the Our Ukraine party elected Our Ukraine Bloc faction leader Viacheslav Kyrylenko its chairman after Presidential Secretariat's head Viktor Baloha relinquished the post of chairman of the council.
