MP Kyrylenko (OU-PSD) Calls For Preservation Of Crimea’s Autonomy (17:31, Wednesday, November 26, 2008)

Parliamentary Deputy Viacheslav Kyrylenko, who is the leader of the parliamentary faction of the Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defense bloc (OU-PSD), has said that it is necessary to preserve the Crimea’s autonomous status.

Kyrylenko was speaking at a news briefing in Simferopol (Crimea) on November 26.

«We recognize the autonomy of the republic of Crimea. It was onсe decided by the Crimean parliament and it is reflected in the Crimean constitution. We stand firmly on the positions of national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and we recognize the administrative territorial divisions that are stipulated in the constitution and approved in it,» Kyrylenko said.

He added that the Crimea needed autonomy because it was a special region of Ukraine.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Crimean parliament’s head Anatolii Hrytsenko has said that the calls for abolition of the Crimean Autonomous Republic pose a threat to Ukraine’s national security.

The Chernivtsi regional chapters of the Narodnyi Rukh of Ukraine party, the Ukrainian People's Party, the Ukrainian Republican Party Sobor, the Congress of Ukrainian Nationalists, and the Svoboda All-Ukrainian Association called on then- Parliament Speaker Arsenii Yatseniuk to initiate parliamentary consideration of the issue of abolishing the status of the Crimea as an autonomous republic.

According to the Chernivtsi regional chapters of these parties, the Crimea is Ukraine's territory, and its autonomy provokes separatism among foreign and local anti-Ukrainian forces.

Svoboda earlier said that it favored abolition of Crimea’s autonomy.

Svoboda also considers it necessary to cancel the current status of Sevastopol.
