The consecration of the Holodomor Victims Memorial has taken place as part of events commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Holodmor famine in 1932-1933.

The first stage of the memorial includes as its central structures the Candle of Memory, the Hall of Memory, and the Wall of Memory.

The height of the central structure is 34 meters. This is a granite candle.

The foundation of the candle is supported by four metal black crosses decorated with bronze figures of storks.

The Candle will be lighted from inside. There are 24 millstones around the candle.

The Hall of Memory is under the Candle.

The construction budget of the first stage of the Holodomor Victims Memorial is nearly UAH 143 million.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Ukraine observes the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor famine on November 22.

President Viktor Yuschenko has declared 2008 the year of commemoration of victims of the Holodomor of 1932-1933.

The Cabinet of Ministers in September instructed the Kyiv City State Administration together with the Institute of National Remembrance to organize an international competition for the best design of a Museum of the 1932-1933 Holodomor Victims in Ukraine, which will make the second stage of the Memorial to the Victims of Famines, and to announce the results of the competition by June 1, 2009.

According to various estimates, the Holodomor artificial famine killed between three million and seven million of innocent people in Ukraine in 1932 and 1933.

There were also Holodomor famines in Ukraine in 1921-1923 and 1946-1947.
