President Viktor Yuschenko has urged leaders of the parliamentary factions to decide a question of a shape of the majority coalition in the Verkhovna Rada.
Iryna Vannykova, the press secretary for the president, told this to the press.
She said the consultations of the president with leaders of the parliamentary factions have been completed.
The aim of the consultations was to restart effective functioning of the Verkhovna Rada and elections of a new speaker of the parliament.
"Parliamentarians must decide the question of a shape of a coalition," Vannykova quoted President Yuschenko as saying.
According to Vannykova, Yuschenko insists that the next coalition must be a workable majority, rather than a formal alliance.
She further said President Yuschenko will continue consultations depending on the situation in the Verkhovna Rada.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, President Yuschenko is concerned that political forces in the Verkhovna Rada cannot arrive at a compromise on a number of vital questions, whereas the parliament should be strong and responsible in the environment of the economic crisis, so as to be able to update anti-crisis measures swiftly.
