2,500 Svoboda supporters are urging Yuschenko to declare Insurgent Army soldiers fighters for Ukraine's independence.

About 2,500 supporters of the all-Ukraine Svoboda union have gathered near the Taras Shevchenko monument in Kyiv to demand that President Viktor Yuschenko grant the status of fighters for Ukraine's independence to soldiers of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA).

The supporters of the Svoboda union are chanting "For the glory of Ukraine! For the glory of the heroes!" and "Ukraine, acknowledge your heroes!"

The rally started at 11:00.

The Svoboda union leader Oleh Tiahnybok stated that their planned march would not be held for a court ban.

According to Tiahnybok, the activists taking part in the action will form a delegation that will head for the Presidential Secretariat to give over their demands to the President.

Svoboda is urging Yuschenko to sign their draft decree on recognition of activities of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army as struggle for Ukraine's independence, and granting the status of fighters for independence to soldiers of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.

The supporters of the Svoboda union are also calling on Yuschenko to reverse the presidential decree on celebration of the Day of Homeland Defenders to establish the Day of the Ukrainian Army that would be celebrated on October 14.

Tiahnybok also noted that the participants of the rally would avoid provocations.

At 17:00, they will attend a festive concert to celebrate the 66th anniversary of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, in May, Yuschenko promised to make Verkhovna Rada grant the veteran status to soldiers of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.
