Ukraine and Poland plan to amend the intergovernmental agreement of June 25, 2001, on cooperation in monitoring people, means of transport, and goods crossing the border between the two countries.

The press service of the Ukrainian embassy in Warsaw announced this to Ukrainian News.

Representatives of the Ukrainian and Polish border services held consultations on amendment of the agreement in Lviv last week.

A representative of the embassy was unable to explain the essence of the proposed amendments, saying that the amendments would be made public after the two countries agree them.

"The strategic line of the two countries on extending the border and customs controls at border crossings on the territory of the neighboring country was confirmed during the negotiations, including on the territory of Ukraine in the future," the press service said.

The embassy also noted the need to amend the agreement in order to avoid legal problems during its implementation, but it did not specify the legal problems.

The two countries planned to amend the agreement's Article 5, which regulates the procedures for crossing the Ukrainian-Polish border.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Poland said in April that the condition for starting talks with the European Commission on joint control of the Ukrainian-Polish border was significant amendment of the legislation that regulates the crossing of the border.

President Viktor Yuschenko said on April 22 that the issue of joint control of the Ukrainian-Polish border could be agreed with the European Commission by early May.

In early March, Yuschenko directed the Cabinet of Ministers to reach agreements with Poland, Hungary, Romania, Russia, and Slovakia on organization of joint controls at Ukraine's borders with these countries by September 2008.

In January, Ukraine and Poland agreed to make a joint appeal to the European Commission on introduction of joint controls on the Ukrainian-Polish border.

Experts believe that introduction of joint controls on the Ukrainian-Polish border will facilitate acceleration of inspections of automobiles at the border, where long lines of trucks have been observed since the start of this year.
