Viktor Yanukovych, leader of the Party of Regions faction at the Verkhovna Rada, stated determination of his political force to secure the status of the second official language for Russian, the party's press service reported.

"All speculations and distortion of facts are aimed at breeding mistrust among our voters, and convincing them that the Party of Regions is ready to postpone consideration of granting the status of second official language to Russian," the press service quoted Yanukovych as saying.

The Party of Regions' leader went on to say that the platform planks are fundamental for the functioning of his political force.

"After gaining a constitutional majority in the parliament we will do the utmost to pass a law on the Russian language as Ukraine's second official," he said.

Yanukovych emphasized that the Party of Regions would never betray its voters for whom this issue is vital.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, on September 19, the Verkhovna Rada passed in first reading the law on civil service; one of its norms allows public employees to speak Russian.

On October 2, the Verkhovna Rada canceled its decision of passing in first reading bill No. 1400 on civil service.
