Party of Regions parliamentary deputy Valerii Konovaliuk, who chairs the Verkhovna Rada temporary commission investigating supplies of weapons from Ukraine to Georgia, suggests creating an arms control committee in the structure of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

He said this during a television bridge "Ukraine's Arms Trade, Tacit and Overt."

Konovaliuk said he will voice the committee initiative at the next meeting of the CIS interparliamentary assembly.

He noted that there is a significant arms load in the territory of the former USSR countries and it moves without any control, posing a threat to all states in the CIS.

He stressed that movement of these weapons must be traced and controlled.

Moreover, he continued, the commission investigating supplies of weapons from Ukraine to Georgia have uncovered facts, yet unproved, that Ukraine continued supplying arms to Georgia after the armed conflict there erupted.

Thus, a military cargo, marked as humanitarian aid, arrived at the Batumi port (Georgia) on September 22, Konovaliuk reported.

The commission also established that over the past four years Ukraine has supplied USD 2.5 billion worth of weapons to Georgia, but the state budget received only UAH 1 billion from these sales.

Konovaliuk noted that President Viktor Yuschenko's attempt to cut short clarification of circumstances in the arms supplies to Georgia could be one of the reasons for his decree on parliament dissolution.

He stressed that the commission will finish all the necessary checks and publish the results in any way.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, at a meeting with Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko on October 2, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of arms sales to Georgia during the recent Russian-Georgian armed conflict.
