One of the three largest Ukrainian alcohol producers, Nemyriv-based Nemiroff company, Vinnytsia region, forecasts growth of the stake of shadow market in case of sudden rise of excises for ethyl spirit and alcoholic drinks.

Nemiroff company president Oleksandr Hlus told this to the Ukrainian News agency.

"This is unprecedented to have raised alcohol excises within the current level of shadow market," he said.

Hlus also said that alcohol excise increase won't entail growth of budget revenues.

Hlus said that even minimum increase of the excise raises the demand for the bootleg products and makes illegal producers more competitive, compared to legal alcohol plants.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Cabinet of Ministers had suggested that the Verkhovna Rada gradually raise excise rated for ethyl spirit and alcoholic drinks by 58% or UAH 12.5 per liter to UAH 34 per liter of 100-percent spirit.

In particular, the Cabinet of Ministers suggests that the parliament fix the excise at the level of UAH 27 per liter for 100-percent spirit for the period of January 1 - June 30, 2009.

In 2007, Nemiroff raised the turnover by 20% or USD 81 million, compared to 2006 to USD 479 million.
