President Viktor Yuschenko calls for Ukrainian youth to be brought up on national victories and triumphs of Ukrainian people.

Ukrainian News learned this from a statement made by the presidential press service.

Yuschenko made the call during his trip in Khmelnytskyi region, where he took part in events marking the 360th anniversary of the victory of Ukrainian Cossacks in the Battle of Pyliavtsi.

"Our duty is to restore the memory of national victories and triumphs, bring up pride in our motherland, self-reliance, and awareness of the strength of Ukrainian people with the young generation of Ukrainians," Yuschenko said.

Yuschenko said the victory in the battle was manifestation of courage and military valour of Cossacks.

"We observe this day as memory of the glory of Ukrainian weapon and Ukrainian spirit, as they [the weapon and the spirit] have won the Ukrainian state for the native land," Yuschenko said.

He said Bohdan Khmelnytskyi strengthened his achievements as the military leader in the Battle of Pyliavtsi after victorious battles near Zhovti Vody and Korsun.

Yuschenko said the victories of those days created grounds for the establishment of the Ukrainian People's Republic early in the 20th century and the modern independent Ukraine.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, President Yuschenko is on visit to Chernivtsi region and Khmelnytskyi region to familiarize himself with the situation in the regions.
