MP Semerak Of Tymoshenko Bloc Presumes BYT And People's Self-Defense Run In Possible Snap Rada Election Together (10:59, Monday, September 8, 2008)

Verkhovna Rada deputy Ostap Semerak of the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc presumes that the BYT and the People's Self-Defense public movement may run in possible snap parliamentary election together

He has announced this in his interview with GlavRed webzine.

"I do not rule out our joint run in [possible preliminary parliamentary] election, as the Ukrainian society has been for a long time waiting for consolidation of democratic forces," the deputy said.

In his opinion, such joint participation of the BYT and People's Self-Defense would be an example of consolidation of democratic forces, remaining in the parliamentary coalition, in case the Our Ukraine People's Self-Defense bloc faction withdraws from the coalition.

Besides, MP Semerak thinks that OU-PSD might not win seats in the parliament through possible early election to Verkhovna Rada.

"The OU-PSD bloc might not pass the election threshold, as the recent sociologic studies show this bloc would receive mere 4% of votes," the deputy says.

He also supposes that the BYT can obtain majority of the deputy mandates at such possible election.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, MP Semerak admits that the parliamentary faction of the Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense bloc would split in several parts if a snap parliamentary election is called.

On September 3, President Viktor Yuschenko announced his intention to disband the Verkhovna Rada in case new coalition is not created in formally endorsed terms.

The People's Self-Defense public movement expressed its opposition to the OU-PSD's withdrawal from the coalition.

The parliamentary faction of the Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense bloc decided on September 2 to withdraw from the parliamentary coalition.

The decision to withdraw from the coalition was backed by 39 of the faction's 72 deputies.

The Our Ukraine People's Union party, the Forward Ukraine! party, the Narodnyi Rukh of Ukraine party, the Ukrainian People's Party, Ukrainian Republican Party Sobor, the Ukrainian People's Party, the Christian Democratic Union, the Pora party, the Party of Defenders of the Fatherland, and the European Party of Ukraine formed the OU-PSD on August 2, 2007, for contesting the 2007 early parliamentary elections.
