The Electorate Committee considers it inadmissible for Ukraine to raise a passing threshold to enter the Verkhovna Rada.
Ukrainian News learned this from a press-release circulated by the Committee.
"The Electorate Committee opposes these initiatives to be launched in Ukraine. If happens, it will be a move backwards to develop democratic processes in this country", the press-service reports.
Aggravation of the political crisis and high probability of snap parliamentary elections have resulted in claims about raising the passing threshold, the Committee says.
The committee members consider the proposal on raising the passing threshold to 10% the most courageous.
"A 10-percent passing threshold will not advance interests of 10 or 15 million voters at a parliament. As the international practice prompts, a political force whose ideas are supported by at least 1 million voters should be given the possibility to enter a Verkhovna Rada", the statement says.
The Electorate Committee emphasizes that the election threshold raised within the closed party lists will lessen responsibility of people's deputies to voters and turn the parliament into a closed club.
The committee members think the existing 3% threshold is optimal for the current political situation in Ukraine.
As Ukrainian News reported, BYuT MP Serhii Teriokhin moved forward with an initiative to increase the election threshold from the current 3% to 10%.
Viacheslav Kyrylenko, leader of the Our Ukraine People's Self-Defense bloc faction at Verkhovna Rada, thinks alleged rise in the parliamentary election threshold to 10% from 3% would legitimize a two-party system of power.
