MPs Symonenko, Alekseev (Communist Party) Proposing That Rada Condemn Georgia's Performance In South Ossetia (16:51, Thursday, August 28, 2008)

Verkhovna Rada deputies of the Communist Party faction Ihor Alekseev and Petro Symonenko (party leader) are proposing that the parliament condemn Georgia's activities spearheaded against the people of South Ossetia, says Draft Resolution #3070 of August 26.

Beside that, they are proposing that Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko's effort to support Georgia's policy on South Ossetia be called as contravening the national interests of Ukraine and the laws in effect, and that impeachment procedure be launched against the head of state.

It is also proposed to consider and approve the bill on the fundamentals of Ukraine's home and foreign policy, providing for Ukraine's neutral status.

The draft resolution stipulates creation in parliament of an ad hoc team to check whether agreements on military cooperation and defense technology supply to Georgia in 2005 - 2008 comply with national laws and international treaties, and to analyze implementation of those agreements.

The MPs also suggest drafting a bill to prohibit military exercises with participation of NATO units in the territory of Ukraine.

As Ukrainian News reported, Petro Symonenko insists on launching the procedure of President Yuschenko impeachment because of his policy of relations with Georgian authorities.

On August 14, Parliament Speaker Arsenii Yatseniuk asked the factions to present their positions on the situation in Georgia so that the parliament could pass a consolidated decision on the issue.

On the night of August 7-8, Georgian troops held a mass attack on the capital of South Ossetia, Tskhinvali, after Georgian authorities blamed separatists from South Ossetia for launching several attacks on civil population and peacekeeping troops in several villages near Tskhinvali.

South Ossetia asked Russia for help.

Russia brought its troops to South Ossetia and started armed confrontation with the Georgian troops.
