Two Security Service Officers: Presidential Secretariat Interfere In Agency's Work (12:09, Thursday, August 28, 2008)

Two officers from the Security Service of Ukraine have reported on interference of the Presidential Secretariat in work of their agency.

Security Service colonel Oleksandr Voitenko said this at a press conference.

"Today, the Security Service of Ukraine does not settle issues of the state sovereignty and national security, but fulfills personal orders of the Presidential Secretariat, which have nothing in common with national interests of Ukraine," Voitenko said.

He said that in this case the Security Service of Ukraine cannot exercise its direct duties.

Voitenko said that this situation disgraces honour of Security Service officers and they do not want to work in conditions of that sort.

Voitenko said that his colleague Security Service major Oleksii Nikolaenko and he intend to resign due to the above facts.

He said that major part of the Security Service officers shares the same opinion.

Besides, Voitenko said that the officers cannot put up with involving the Security Service of Ukraine in the case upon treason by Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

Voitenko said that the case had been fabricated by the Presidential Secretariat.

At the same time, the officers called on President Viktor Yuschenko to stop Presidential Secretariat's interference into the work of the Security Service.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, on August 27, the Security Service addressed the Cabinet of Ministers requesting to provide information on Presidential Secretariat's appeal on threats to state security.

On August 18, the Presidential Secretariat asked the enforcers to check information about agreements reached between the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc and Russia concerning support of a bloc's candidacy at the forthcoming presidential elections by Russia%
