U.S. Senators Graham And Lieberman Think Georgian Conflict To Accelerate Ukraine’s Accession To NATO (13:07, Wednesday, August 20, 2008)

U.S. senators Lindsay Graham and Joe Lieberman think that the Georgian conflict will accelerate Ukraine’s joining the NATO Membership Action Plan.

They announced this to Ukrainian News.

Senator Lieberman hopes that those NATO member-states who doubted the necessity of granting MAP to Ukraine will change their opinion and support Ukraine on this way.

«I hope that the crisis in Georgia will remind NATO members about how important it is to expand the protection umbrella of the NATO bloc on democratic countries. I hope that the countries that doubted the necessity to grant MAP to Ukraine will change their opinion after the Georgian crisis and they will decide to say «Yes»,» J. Lieberman stressed.

In L. Graham’s opinion, the Georgian conflict will help along Ukraine’s efforts to accede to the Alliance.

«I think that this [the Georgian conflict] will help Ukrainian efforts to become a NATO member. This must help,» senator Graham noted.

He thinks that democratic countries must not wage war between each other but settle conflicts in other ways, for instance, by the diplomatic way.

Lindsay Graham is Republican senator from South Carolina, he is working in five committees of the state, including the one for armed forces.

Joe Lieberman is senator from Connecticut, he ran for vice president of the United States in 2000, when Albert Gore was Democratic candidate for President.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the United States stand for Ukraine’s soonest joining NATO Membership Action Plan.

The United States called on Ukrainians to form a single opinion on the issue of accession of Ukraine to NATO.
