MP Zhvania (OU-PSD) Asks European Human Rights Court To Declare Attempts To Cancel His Citizenship Illegal (14:53, Thursday, July 24, 2008)

Parliamentary Deputy David Zhvania of the Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense bloc (OU-PSD) has asked the European Human Court of Human Rights to declare illegal the actions of the government and judicial organs that are attempting to strip him of his Ukrainian citizenship.

The press service of the People's Self-Defense public movement announced this to Ukrainian News.

"A group of lawyers on international law has prepared Zhvania's complaint about the actions of the government and judicial organs that are attempting to strip him of his Ukrainian citizenship - which grossly violates his right as a person and citizen - and sent it to the European Human Court of Human Rights," the press service said.

In his complaint, Zhvania said that these actions violated Section 1, Article 6 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (which states that everyone has the right to a fair and public hearing of his case by an independent court within a reasonable period).

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Zhvania has called for introduction of dual citizenship in Ukraine.

On July 2, the Kyiv Appeal Court overturned the Radianskyi District Court of Kyiv's ruling that confirmed that Zhvania has been living on Ukraine's territory for 10 years.

On June 18, the Kyiv Appeal Court authorized the Prosecutor-General's Office to file an appeal against the Radianskyi District Court of Kyiv's ruling that confirmed that Zhvania has been living on Ukraine's territory for 10 years, on the basis of which he was granted Ukrainian citizenship.
