Kharkiv City Council Secretary Kernes Assesses His Arrest As Lutsenko's Desire To Settle Accounts (14:53, Wednesday, July 23, 2008)

Kharkiv City Council Secretary Hennadii Kernes his arrest on July 22 accounted for a desire of Interior Minister Yurii Lutsenko to settle accounts with him.

Ukrainian News learned this from a statement by the press service of the Party of Regions.

"All actions by policemen against me represented execution of a command 'go!' personally from the head of the Ministry of Interior Affairs, who is settling personal accounts with me this way. He gave emotionally colorful descriptions in his public speeches of what he would do to me, and it was not for nothing," Kernes said.

Kernes said uniformed and masked men with weapon kidnapped him at 13:00 on July 22.

Kernes was brought to the Lukianivske detention center in Kyiv first and to the Ministry of Interior Affairs at 10 Bohomoltsia Street later.

Kernes thanked citizens for rallying outside the Ministry of Interior Affairs in his support.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, police on July 22 arrested Kharkiv city council secretary Hennadii Kernes for receiving his testimony in a murder case.

Interior Minister Lutsenko said Kernes would be released from custody by July 23.

The Party of Regions said Lutsenko was settling accounts in arresting Kernes.
