Police Detain Kharkiv City Council Secretary Kernes For Testimony In Murder Case (17:27, Tuesday, July 22, 2008)

Police officers have detained Kharkiv city council secretary Hennadii Kernes for receiving his testimony in a murder case.

Ukrainian News learned this from the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

“Kernes has been brought to the investigator by force because he had ignored the law and his duty of a citizen for a long time,” the press service quoted Internal Affairs Minister Yurii Lutsenko as saying.

The press service stressed that Kernes had dodged the receipt of subpoena or other notice inviting him for questioning.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, police plan to take Kharkiv city council secretary Kernes to Kyiv.

The Kharkiv city council reported on Tuesday that Kernes had been detained by unknown people in masks.

Lutsenko stated that Kernes was hiding from Ukrainian law enforcers in Russia.

However, Kernes denied this statement in an interview with the Kommersant newspaper on July 16.

Lutsenko said that Kernes would be brought for interrogation by force if he kept avoiding the investigator.
