About 40% of ancient frescos which used to be ornamented in the Mykhailivskyi Golden-Domed Cathedral have been returned to Ukraine, Kyiv Mayor Leonid Chernovetskyi said at the presentation ceremony of the restored frescos.
The Kyiv authorities appealed to the management of the Tretyakov Gallery, the Novgorod Arts Museum and the Russian Museum in St.Petersburg for returning 60% of frescos and mosaics taken from Ukraine.
Unique iconic arts of the XII-IXX centuries represented in three halls were bought from private collectors for budget funds, Vitalii Zhuravskyi, deputy head of the Kyiv city administration, said.
The exposition includes the holy gates and the iconostasis column of the XVIII century, church records, three icons of St. Barbara, the icon of the Holy Saviour's image of the XIX century, a riza of the icon of St. Elias of the XVIII century, a floorplate of the XIX century, a church bell on the wooden pole of 1896 and other iconic arts, Zhuravskyi said.
