Russia Urge Ukraine To Respect All Bilateral Agreements (16:39, Friday, July 18, 2008)

Russia hopes Ukraine will respect all Ukrainian-Russian agreements.

Ukrainian News learned this from a statement by the information department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"We will hope that the Ukrainian side will treat with respect [as Russia does] the whole corpus of the existing legal and contractual base in the relations between Moscow and Kyiv, including the agreement on the basing of the Black Sea Fleet," the information department quoted Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying.

With the exception of extreme cases that directly concern security interests of the state, it is necessary to avoid any steps that might question the existing international and legal in the relations between countries, Lavrov said.

According to Lavrov, Russia exercises this very approach in the treatment of the friendship and partnership treaty with Ukraine.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Ukraine is not intending to move forward with an initiative to denounce the friendship and partnership treaty with Russia.

The Duma, the lower chamber of the Russian parliament, on June 4 called on the Russian government to consider a possibility of breaking the agreement on friendship and cooperation with Ukraine.
