The Jonson Tower of the medieval Genoa fortress Chembalo collapsed at night July, 17 because of soil underwater in Balaklav (Sevastopol), Serhii Kurochkin, assistant chief of the Department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and Protection of Population from Chornobyl Aftermaths in Sevastopol, told Ukrainian News.
One-third of the tower was collapsed, he said.
An investigation commission is working on the site of the incident, he noted.
Restoration work in the Chembalo fortress, a national monument of architecture, had to be launched three years ago, but was postponed because of a lack of sufficient financing, Kurochkin said. The Genoa fortress Chembalo is a historic sight and architectural monument of the Khersones national historical and archeological reserve (Sevastopol)
