The promise is contained in a joint statement by President Viktor Yuschenko and Latvia's President Valdis Zatlers.
"The president of Latvia expressed his support for Ukraine's European aspirations and its goal of gradually integrating into the European Union... The president of Latvia reaffirmed his readiness to provide further support and assistance to Ukraine in realization of its Euro-Atlantic course, particularly support for early accession of Ukraine to the NATO Membership Action Plan," the statement says.
Yuschenko and Zatlers shared the opinion that the new, enhanced agreement between Ukraine and the European Union should be based on the principles of political association and economic integration.
Yuschenko and Zatlers also discussed Ukrainian-Latvian bilateral economic relations and noted potential for their further development.
At a joint press conference with Zatlers, Yuschenko said that Ukraine had a unique chance of adopt borrowing from Latvia's experiences in the areas of European and Euro-Atlantic integration.
"This is a dialogue, in which it is important for us to use those experiences and the knowledge possessed by the countries in the last wave of integration into the European Union and NATO. Latvia can pass its unique baggage of knowledge, advice, and technical aid related to implementation of various provisions of the Ukrainian-European Union action plan and the Ukrainian-NATO action plan," Yuschenko said.
Yuschenko also said that it was agreed during talks with Zatlers that a delegation from the Ukrainian Defense Ministry would visit Latvia in the summer to study the experience of the Latvian army in transforming itself into a contract army and the peculiarities of its cooperation with NATO.
Zatlers said that Latvia not only supported Ukraine's European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations, but it is also ready to provide assistance in realizing these aspirations.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Zatlers arrived in Ukraine on Wednesday morning for an official visit.
