Ukraine Intends To Achieve European Prospect Through Economic Integration With EU (14:15, Wednesday, July 2, 2008)

Ukraine is intending to receive a signal of the prospect of its admission to the European Union by way of economic integration with the EU.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Volodymyr Ohryzko announced this on the night of July 1 in Batumi where he participated in the third summit of GUAM.

Commenting on the possibility of the planned signing of the political section of the new enhanced agreement between Ukraine and the European Union at a summit in September, he said that Ukraine has decided to sign the document as a whole.

"We want to go a bit different way. We want to have a well-prepared economic section that will indicate that we really begin economic integration, which will objectively lead to a situation that we will get to political estimates," Ohryzko said.

The desirable political aims that should be set out in the political section of the agreement include the granting of EU membership prospect, signing of agreement on association with the EU and the possibility of abolishing visas for Ukrainians, the minister said.

He added that 95% of the political section of the agreement will be ready and noted that joint talks on economic and political sections will allow Ukraine to achieve better results.

"We should synchronize political and economic processes and have the maximum result in the end," the minister said.

Ohryzko disapproved that the political section of the enhanced agreement will not be signed due to inside political problems of Ukraine, and stressed that the country is going through normal democratic processes.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, President Viktor Yuschenko hopes the political part of the enhanced agreement between Ukraine and the European Union will be signed in September.

Former minister of foreign affairs Borys Tarasiuk, who now is a member of the Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense Bloc faction in parliament, said the most optimistic outlook on the signing data is before 2010.

Tarasiuk said in February that the new enhanced agreement with the EU might be signed in September, but free trade area points would not be included in this case.
