The Interior Affairs Ministry has published a list of the candidates contesting the Kyiv mayoral and municipal council elections who previously faced criminal investigation.
This is stated in a report published on the Interior Affairs Ministry's official Internet website.
According to the statement, officers from the police division for fighting organized crime checked the candidates' possible involvement in illegal activities.
According to the Interior Affairs Ministry, a Kyiv regional court sentenced mayoral candidate Hryhorii Chernysh, 66, to four years in jail in 1973 for bribery, but he was released early.
Moreover, according to the ministry, the Zhovtnevyi district court of Kyiv sentenced Chernysh to five years in jail for fraud in 1982, but he was also released early.
A search was launched for him in 1994 for abuse of power and escape from prison.
According to the Interior Affairs Ministry, Chernysh was able to avoid punishment because of his corrupt ties, and prosecutor closed the criminal case against him in 1998.
The Interior Affairs Ministry also says that candidates Petro Ivanov and Ihor Lavrov of the Leonid Chernovetskyi Bloc were also involved in criminal cases.
According to the ministry, the Lytvyn Bloc's top 10 list of candidates includes Oleksandr Lyschenko, who was jailed several times for car theft and illegal possession of weapons.
According to the ministry, Lyschenko was a member of the Prysch's criminal gang and the right-hand man of the gang's leader Valerii Pryschyk, who was killed in 2003.
Moreover, according to the ministry, the election list of the Party of the Regions includes Sviatoslav Korotkov, who faced criminal investigation for fraud.
Elections of the Kyiv mayor and the Kyiv municipal council will take place on May 25.
