Yuschenko: Luzhkov's Reports On Sevastopol Status Humiliating Ukrainian Nation (11:57, Thursday, May 15, 2008)

President Viktor Yuschenko considers that reports of Moscow city mayor Yurii Luzhkov on status of Sevastopol humiliate Ukrainian nation.

He disclosed this in an interview to BBC World Service.

"I would like Ukrainian people to understand that the reports are humiliating. If we accept a guest at our home, he must respect it and interests of people living in it despite their nationality," Yuschenko said.

According to the president, Security Service's decision to ban Luzhkov from visiting Ukraine was quite logic.

"When something irreverent is told about Ukrainian nation, Ukrainian sovereignty, integrity of Ukrainian territory and Ukrainian border, the guest will respond in accordance with the Constitution of Ukraine," he said.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, on May 13, Luzhkov said he considers Sevastopol a key point for security of southern borders of Russia.

On May 11, Luzhkov said that the city had never been handed over to Ukraine and that its is necessary to again raise the question on Sevastopol's identity.
