Ukraine And Lithuania Agree To Develop Cooperation In Areas Of Energy Security, European And Euro-Atlantic Integration (15:50, Monday, May 12, 2008)

Ukraine and Lithuania have agreed to develop cooperation in the areas of energy security, European integration, and Euro-Atlantic integration.

This is stipulated in a joint declaration that President Viktor Yuschenko and Lithuania's President Valdas Adamkus signed in Lithuania.

The declaration stresses that the close relations between the two countries have reached the level of strategic partnership.

Yuschenko and Adamkus stated in the declaration that Ukraine and Lithuania would continue to facilitate safe supply of energy and transparency of their energy industries as well as integration into the European energy market and joint participation in energy projects and deepen consultations on the search for alternative sources of energy and green technologies.

Moreover, Lithuania promised to support a decision on inviting Ukraine to join the NATO Membership Action Plan at the next meeting of NATO foreign ministers in December.

Ukraine and Lithuania also stated in the declaration their desire to cooperate in further developing the transport corridor between the Baltic Sea and Black Sea regions as well as in extending this corridor to the Caspian-Caucasus and Scandinavian-Western European regions.

Ukraine and Lithuania also undertook to continue their strategic cooperation in promoting and consolidating democratic values and freedom in the region because they believe that this is a key condition for peace, stability, and prosperity in Europe and neighboring countries.

Ukraine and Lithuania also agreed in the declaration to join their efforts to honor the memories of the victims of totalitarian regimes, including the victims of the famines and repression in Ukraine, Lithuania, and other countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Yuschenko and Lithuania's President Adamkus discussed Ukraine's integration into the European and Euro-Atlantic communities on May 12.

Yuschenko paid a one-day official visit to Lithuania on May 12.

Lithuania has expressed its readiness to assist Ukraine in informing the Ukrainian population about NATO.
