President Viktor Yuschenko has called for the feats of all the participants in the Second World War to be honored.
Yuschenko made the call in his Victory Day address on May 9.
"Ukrainians fought in various armies, but against a common enemy - Nazism. They fought for one goal - for the honor and freedom of the fatherland, for the happiness of their people," Yuschenko said.
He stressed that the victory in the Second World War opened the way for Ukraine to gain independence in 1991.
"These two fateful events are the common feats of the Ukrainian people in the XX century. Without your victory, history would have gone another way. Without your feats, there would be no Europe, there would be no Ukraine," Yuschenko said.
On his part, Yuschenko promised to do everything possible to improve the material and social conditions of war veterans.
"I, as the president of Ukraine, am making and will always make the maximum effort to ensure that the country cares for and supports veterans, to ensure that you are provided decent living conditions and the appropriate social guaranties," Yuschenko said.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Yuschenko has called on the government to improve the material and social conditions of the veterans of the Great Patriotic War.
