CEC's Deputy Chairman Mahera Concerned By Poor Operations Of Polling-Station Election Commissions In Kyiv (19:06, Thursday, May 8, 2008)

The Central Electoral Commission's Deputy Chairman Andrii Mahera has expressed concern over the poor operations of polling-station election commissions in Kyiv.

Mahera was speaking to journalists.

"Regarding polling-station election commissions, I cannot say that I am fully satisfied with their work," Mahera said.

According to him, the commissions are frequently unable to hold meetings due to lack of quorums.

In connection with this, Mahera called on the political forces participating in the Kyiv municipal elections to recognize their responsibilities for organization of the elections and ensure that their representatives attend meetings of polling-station election commissions.

"If [work] is not established in the course of the next few days, I will ask for additional information [from polling-station election commissions] and disclose it in the press," Mahera said.

He expressed the hope that the commissions would start work and that there would be no grounds to speak of possible disruption of the elections.

"I have no feeling that the elections will be disrupted," he said.

At the same time, he said that the Kyiv municipal election commission was working smoothly and efficiently.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Kyiv municipal election commission has accused participants in the Kyiv municipal council elections of exerting pressure on it.

Elections of the Kyiv mayor and the Kyiv municipal council will take place on May 25.
