Yanukovych Confident Ukrainian-Russian Strategic Partnership Will Develop Following Appointment Of Putin As Russia's Prime Minister (18:07, Thursday, May 8, 2008)

Viktor Yanukovych, the leader of the parliamentary faction of the Party of the Regions and the head of the shadow cabinet, has expressed confidence that the Ukrainian-Russian strategic partnership will develop following the appointment of former Russian president Vladimir Putin as the country's prime minister.

Yanukovych expressed this confidence in his congratulatory message to Putin, a text of which Ukrainian News obtained.

"I am confident that the activities of the government headed by you will facilitate steady development of the relations of strategic partnership between Ukraine and Russia and strengthening of the many centuries of unshakable friendship between our peoples," the congratulatory message states.

According to Yanukovych, the experience of effective cooperation between the two countries creates favorable conditions and open new opportunities for deepening of relations between the two countries.

"Much-esteemed Vladimir Vladimirovich, I wish you further successes in your government activities and new achievements for the benefit of the brotherly people of Russia," Yanukovych said in the message.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has expressed the belief that the appointment of Putin as Russia's prime minister will facilitate acceleration of Ukrainian-Russian cooperation.

Russia's State Duma (the lower house of parliament) approved Putin as the prime minister of Russia on May 8.
