Verkhovna Rada deputy, one of the leaders of the Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko Mykola Tomenko has said that advertising of alcohol brands on television from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. should be banned as well as direct advertising of beer.
He said this to the press after a meeting with heads of the leading television channels and advertising agencies.
The parliamentarian stressed that a set of norms of the enacted law comes into force on May 10, which among other things stipulate that a written consent of a person is required for using his/her face or name in advertising, and that celebrities are prohibited from advertising beer and beer-based drinks and respective trademarks.
Tomenko, who was one of the authors of this bill, expressed hope that these norms will be observed by all advertising agencies and television channels.
"It is important to me that execution of the law begins on May 10," he said.
The deputy stressed that the section of the law that bans voiced announcements on television about alcohol producers sponsoring some events, as well as the mention of the name of an alcohol product or a trademark, and that bans advertising of cigarettes, alcoholic beverages or their respective trademarks in outdoor advertising media comes into force on January 1, 2009.
He said the ban on advertising of alcohol and cigarette and their respective trademarks in the printed press (expect for specialized publications) becomes effective on January 1, 2010.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Association of Outdoor Advertising expects a rise in the number of adverts of banks, financial services and cars due to the Verkhovna Rada ban on outdoor advertising of alcohol and tobacco.
In March, the parliament passed the law that imposes these restrictions.
