OSCE High Commissioner On National Minorities Vollebaek To Visit Ukraine On March 25-28 (15:02, Tuesday, March 25, 2008)

High Commissioner on National Minorities of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Knut Vollebaek will visit Ukraine to meet with the authorities on March 25-28.

Vasyl Kyrylych, the head of the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced this to the press.

Vollebaek is scheduled to meet with President Viktor Yuschenko, National Security and Defense Council Secretary Raisa Bohatyriova, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Justice Ministry, Ministry for Affairs of Family, Youth Policy, and Sport, and Education and Science Ministry.

Vollebaek is to discuss a set of issues related to the provision of the rights of national minorities and repatriated deportees in Ukraine, the language issues. Vollebaek is to continue the monitoring of the situation with the observation of the rights of national minorities in Crimea.

Thus, Vollebaek is intending to visit Simferopol and meet with the top officials of Crimea and representatives of NGOs representing different ethnic groups in Crimea.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Council for the Issues of Ethnic and National Policy to the President considers it necessary to create a center of national minorities of Ukraine in Kyiv.
