Elected Russian President Medvedev Says Ukrainian And Georgian Membership Of NATO Might Do Harm To European Security (12:26, Tuesday, March 25, 2008)

Newly elected Russian President Dmitry Medvedev believes that the possible entry of Ukraine and Georgia in NATO may do harm to the European security.

He gave his position in an interview with the Financial Times.

Medvedev said Russia would be displeased with the NATO's coming closer to its borders.

"No state can be pleased with the presence at its borders of representatives of a military alliance if it is not a member of the alliance," he said.

Medvedev said Russia might be displeased with the developments in Ukraine and Georgia too.

"We believe it is extremely unpleasant for the existing structure of the European security," he said.

Medvedev noted that majority of Ukrainian citizens were opposed to Ukraine's possible joining NATO, while the government made steps toward the alliance.

Medvedev said a national referendum was needed.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, President Viktor Yuschenko is ready to guarantee that Ukraine's joining the NATO Membership Action Plan poses no threat to Russia.

Ukraine is intending to insist on its joining the NATO Membership Action Plan at the Bucharest summit of NATO in April.
