Katerynchuk Doubts Tymoshenko Bloc And OU-PSD Will Nominate Joint Candidate For Possible Kyiv Mayoral Elections (19:34, Wednesday, March 5, 2008)

Parliamentary Deputy Mykola Katerynchuk of the Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense bloc (OU-PSD), who is the leader of the European Party, has expressed doubt that the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc and the OU-PSD will nominate a single candidate in case of early mayoral elections in Kyiv.

Katerynchuk was speaking at a meeting of the club of experts called "Ukrainian Choice: Early Elections in Kyiv, Its Appropriateness, Forecasts, and Format," which was organized by the Ukrainian News information agency.

"It seems to me - this is my forecast - that there will be no single candidate. Democratic have never promptly reached agreement on the long-term future. Unification has always taken place five minutes to the shooting," Katerynchuk said.

Moreover, he said that there are insufficient legislative grounds for holding early mayoral and municipal-council elections in Kyiv, although the need to change the authorities in Kyiv exists.

Moreover, according to him, mayoral elections in all population centers should be held in two rounds while elections of local councils should be based on the majority representation system.

However, he expressed the belief that the parliament does not have the political will to amend the active legislation.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Interior Affairs Minister Yurii Lutsenko and the Vitalii Klychko bloc's leader Vitalii Klychko have both stated their possible participation in early mayoral elections in Kyiv if such elections are held.

The Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc and the Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense bloc agreed in October 2007 to form a coalition in the sixth parliament and initiate early mayoral and municipal-council elections in Kyiv.

The Ukrainian News information agency has been operating on the Ukrainian information market since 1993, and it is presently the leading provider of business, financial, and political news in the country.

The Agency for Modeling Situations was founded in 2002 by a group of political scientists, sociologists, journalists, and public-relations specialists. It engages in political analysis and drafting of medium- and long-term forecasts.
