Experts Believe That Tymoshenko Bloc's Position Will Strengthen If Early Parliamentary Elections Are Held (13:41, Tuesday, February 19, 2008)

Political scientists and commentators believe that the electoral position of the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc will strengthen significantly if early parliamentary elections are held.

This is indicated by the result of a poll conducted among members of the club of experts called Ukrainian Choice on February 18.

Moreover, the political scientists and commentators polled believe that if the political crisis escalates further, then it is quite probable that early presidential elections will be the way out of the crisis.

The political scientists and commentators also believe that attempts to recreate the current parliamentary coalition and a possible decision by the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc to go into opposition could serve as the main reason for possible organization of early presidential elections.

Most of the experts polled believe that the current communications problem among the country's political elite is the result of a war of ambitions among politicians as well as a sign of that elections are approaching.

Meanwhile, some experts say that the main problem in relations among the President, the Cabinet of Ministers, and the parliament is the unfinished constitutional reform, which allows each one of them to interpret the Constitution in different ways.

According to the director of the Agency for Modeling Situations, Vitalii Bala, the attitudes of politicians and political scientists to the essence of the current political crisis are different.

"Politicians are obviously overdoing things because they believe that blocking [the parliament's] rostrum, walking a verbal tightrope, and increased antagonism between branches of government is the standard method of political communication," Bala said.

However, according to Bala, experts believe that all the signs of a systemic crisis in the political model in Ukraine are visible.

"At the same time, the active operations of the government are extremely positively perceived by voters against the backdrop of a parliament that is not working today. And this is despite the fact that the Presidential Secretariat proposes its counter-initiative to every initiative from the Cabinet of Ministers," Bala said.

The Ukrainian Choice expert club is a joint project by the Ukrainian News information agency and the Agency for Modeling Situations.

The project is aimed at creating an avenue for debating pressing socio-political issues and creating effective mechanisms for cooperation among experts and politicians.
